Subject: Information required of Bibliographers/ Selectors
Our Acquisitions Department has recently absorbed the Pre-Order Search Unit
from Collection Development, where this Unit formerly functioned as support
staff. The Unit has lost two full-time professional faculty and relies
heavily on student workers, the funds for which have just been cut. Our
bibliographers are accustomed to submitting fragmentary, confusing
information in order requests, relying on the Unit to clarify or fill in
the lacunae. With reduced staff and an increased workload in Acquisitions,
we find it is no longer possible to accept such orders. What do other
academic libraries require from bibs submitting requests (i.e. one item per
page, reliable source for info such as vendor database, complete
notification info with name and email address etc.)? What happens if the
info is incomplete--does it get sent back? We are planning to institute a
much stricter policy about order requests and it would be helpful to know
about what has succeeded at other libraries.
