[Ed. Note: Subscribers - how about sending in any experiences you
have had in the past with these publishers. The ACQNET archive
search engine is "down" but is being repaired - there are probably
some references to the Gilles there, and I will alert everyone when we
can get back to the archives...]

Subject: Who were the "Gilles?"

May I ask who the infamous "Gilles" who used to be so active in the
1970's and 1980's are, or what the story behind this is?
Thank you --

Subject: Regarding Somerset Publishers

For twelve years, from 1975-1987, I was Vice President and General
Manager of the Academic Book Center in Portland, Oregon. I can
advise with complete candor that the individual(s) behind this front,
and numerous other shadow companies and addresses, systematically
"looted" libraries with phoney advertisements and false representation
about the nature and content of hundreds of book titles. Our company
fell victim this operation as well. Typically we would be required to
prepay for materials that often were not available, or were not as
represented. When we requested refunds, they never came. I cannot
document these statements with physical proof, as I am no longer
affiliated with Academic Book Center. Nonetheless, there are a dozen
libraray book suppliers nationwide who would have paper files backing
these assertions.
