Subject: Lifespan of Library Materials
Effective July 1, 2001, colleges and universities (in Hawaii) will be
required to depreciate their collections for Financial Statement purposes.
The University of Hawaii Library has been asked to recommend the average
useful life of its collection. Separate recommendations are
required for each format: monographs, serials, cd-roms, periodicals,
newspapers, microfiche, audio cassettes, video cassettes, etc. We have
until the end of the month to come up with formulae.
We would appreciate hearing how other libraries have calculated
depreciation of their collections. Is there a "blue book" for library
materials? Thank you for your thoughts and any leads you send our way.
