Hi,
A friend forwarded a copy of your conversation about linking to eBooks and I
wanted to share a thought. At the Naval Research Lab, we use Sirsi's STILAS
which is a MARC-based system and supports the 856 field, which is a URL
field. In the full record display of our system, we've added links to
journal web sites from the catalog record. This is what I was planning to
do for an e-book purchase that we had in the works (ITknowledge which went
out of business). As long as your system is MARC-based, it should support
the 856 field which has a subfield for the URL and for the description (so
that you can say Full Content Link versus http://....
It won't be a link from the call number field but will work just the same.
I hope that helps and feel free to add this to your discussion list if you
desire.

I've never seen a system that will do that and I've often wished it could.
Since there is often call number searching that can be done, the link on the
call numbers lead you to browse in that area. I suspect that if you had the
call number field link to another MaRC tag it would have to do that in all
the records. As an alternative you might want to see if you can get the URL
to display either nearer your items or near the top of the screen so it's
more noticeable.

Subject: DRA and e-books
To other libraries with DRA and e-books:
We recently acquired 500 e-books from netLibrary and downloaded the MARC
records. We have DRAweb2 and ideally we'd like to have the link in the call
number box. DRA says this isn't possible but I'd like to see if anyone else
has tried it successfully. If it won't work, we'll probably just put a
message in the box directing the patron to the link above. The other part of
this is: is there a way to do this for all records simultaneously rather
than one-at-a-time?
Please contact me directly. Thanks.
