ACQUISITIONS/SERIALS LIBRARIAN

The University of Pittsburgh Barco Law Library invites applicants for the
position of Acquisitions/Serials Librarian.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Technical Services, the
Acquisitions/Serials Librarian manages the work of the Acquisitions and
Serials sections, which includes pre-order searching, ordering, serials
check-in, claiming, and binding of library materials in all formats. Selects
library vendors and evaluates their performance. Monitors library's standing
orders and approval plans. Resolves complex problems relating to
monographic, serial, or continuation receipt. Oversees government documents
control operations, including check-in, claiming, and comprehensive
management of the Library's government documents depository program. Ensures
quality control of law library's Voyager database records for ordering and
check-in. Regulates work flow and adjusts workloads. Coordinates policies
and procedures with other departments. Prepares monthly and annual section
statistics. Participates in collection development committee. Participates
in reference desk rotation. Participates in professional organizations and
keeps abreast of current trends in acquisitions, serials management, and the
publishing industry.

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Minimum qualifications: ALA accredited MLS, 2 years relevant professional
experience in library technical services, knowledge of legal publishing and
acquisitions procedures, solid knowledge and experience with an automated
integrated library system. Experience with use of the Internet for
acquisitions work. Previous supervisory experience, excellent planning,
organizational and communication skills. Proficiency with OCLC, AACR2, and
MARC. Ability to prioritize work under pressure in an environment of change.
Ability to work cooperatively to accomplish departmental and library goals.
Familiarity with Windows, spreadsheet, word processing, and database
software. 
Desirable qualifications: experience with Voyager ILS, Microsoft Access,
previous reference experience, previous experience with government
depository program.

SALARY: 

Salary and faculty librarian rank are commensurate with experience. Benefits
include dental, eye, and medical insurance options, TIAA-CREF or Vanguard
retirement, University educational, and 23 days of vacation annually.

THE LAW LIBRARY:

The Barco Law Library's collection consists of approximately 365,000 volumes
and equivalents and has an acquisitions budget in excess of $900,000
annually. The Technical Services Department consists of 1 Assistant
Director, 2 professional librarians, 4 support staff, and numerous student
employees. The library uses OCLC and Voyager for it's online catalog. Yankee
Book Peddler's GOBI system is used extensively for monographic book orders.
