[Ed. note: It's likely that our colleague who posted this query
originally will be contacted directly by a number of reputable vendors
who are willing to help him with these orders. The two mentioned below
are just two of many that we all use.]

Whenever possible we use 21 Main Street http://www.21northmain.com/

They act as a "middleperson" between mom and pop vendors and
libraries, by allowing libraries to have an account with which they may
use purchase orders even when ordering from several different moms and pops.
21 Main street sends only one invoice to you. They don't have everything all
the time, but this may cut down on your numbers.

We use Book House for orders like this. As long as we give them the
publisher's address and phone no. (if we have it), they'll try to get the
item for us. We just put the info. in a vendor notes field which either
prints on the order slip or is transmitted to them electronically. Sometimes
we end up having to go direct, but not very often.

I'll be happy to provide you their address and phone number, if you don't
have it.

Subject: "Mom and Pop" direct vendors

We are finding more and more, that in order to satisfy our customer
requests, we are sending single title orders directly to the publisher.
In most instances, these publishers are only used once and are not on our
SWING contract. Many do not use a credit card and may require a prepayment.

We have sent individual title orders to over 500 different publishers
in the past year. As this can be a labor intensive process, I was wondering
what other libraries did to purchase those type of items.

Currently, we are using a "test" company to research our requests and
obtain them from several different publishers. Although we may not get a
discount, we save on the staff time to research, order and process payment
from one vendor as opposed to using multiple vendors. If anyone has a process
or a contact that they use, I would love to hear from you.
