Network News 15 (April 6, 1995) URL = http://hegel.lib.ncsu.edu/stacks/serials/nnews/nnews-15 _________________________________________________________________ NETWORK NEWS #15 _________________________________________________________________ Number 15 / April 6, 1995 WE'VE BEEN "WEBBED" This issue of Network News has been "webbed" and is available at http://garnet.msen.com:70/0h/vendor/maven/inet1/nnews/net15.html. LIBCAT LIBCAT: A Guide to Library Resources on the Internet has been updated and converted to HTML. In the process a number of changes have taken place: the Gopher and World Wide Web sections have been updated, WWW links have been added wherever possible, and, of course, the format has changed considerably. In order to make a plain text version available for those who wish to print one or more sections of the guide most uniform resource locators have been included as separate text. The biggest changes are in the appendices covering library catalogs around the world. While a number of new countries and scores of new libraries have been added, the biggest change is in the amount of information available in the catalog listings. The listing now includes login instructions, notes on special collections and databases, and Telnet, Gopher and WWW addresses and links. With well over a thousand libraries on the net, it should come as no surprise to find that more than half have Gopher and/or Web servers. The following entry for New York Public Library shows how LIBCAT library records look now. NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY TELNET: nyplgate.nypl.org or 149.123.1.2 LOGON: Login: type nypl LOGOFF: From main menu SC: Arents Tobacco Collection; Lewis Carroll SC: Berg Collection of English and American Literature SC: Schomburg Collection of Black Culture SC: Book Arts Collection WWW URL: http://www.nypl.org/ Gopher URL: gopher://gopher.nypl.org/ Although portions of the old familiar A Guide to Internet/Bitnet have also been "webbed," I haven't decided what to do with it. There are so many guides to the Internet available in bookstores, libraries and on the net itself that I doubt that there is much point in updating the endless lists of resources and connections. It is likely that the finished version will be more compact and point to other sources of information on free-nets, databases, etc. If you have any suggestions, I would like to hear them. Copies of both LIBCAT and the Guide will continue to be available on the NNEWS listserv, but the most up-to-date versions will always be the HTML ones on the Metronet Web. Updated List of State Information Servers One of the most popular items from the last issue of Network News was the list of state information services on the Internet. The list has been updated frequently and can be found at http://garnet.msen.com:70/0h/vendor/maven/inet1/nnews/states.html. The list is limited to services that are clearly managed by state agencies and does not include links to information about state government found on university or free-net systems. However, if a state agency supplies and controls the the information on a non-state server, it is included. Some states have only one or two links; other have dozens. The number of links does not reflect the quantity or quality of the information available. Some states offer comprehensive information from a just single site - often the main state or state library server. If you would like to add your site to the list, please contact Dana Noonan at noonan@msus1.msus.edu. Index of Minnesota Internet Services One of the projects I have been working on since last Fall has been an index of Minnesota based or related Internet sites. The index is available at: http://garnet.msen.com:70/0h/vendor/maven/mn/mn.html. Choice items from the index include: * University of Minnesota's Borchert Map Library URL: http://whiplash.micro.umn.edu/map.html The server offers thematic maps based on 1990 Census data for the Twin Cites and a number of thumbnail views from the Historical Cartography Project. * Society for American Baseball Research URL: http://www.skypoint.com/subscribers/ashbury/hhhomepage.html The Halsey Hall Chapter sponsors this page that will satisfy the information cravings of even the most ardent fans. Be sure to check out the Quicksteps (19th Century Re-creation Team). * Bitstream Underground URL: http://bitstream.net/bsuonline/ Up-beat, avant-garde, with-it, and all the other hyphenated terms you know describes the content and presentation of the Underground. * Paisley Park Studios URL: http://www.bitstream.net:80/paisleypark/ The fellow who used to be known as Prince is from Minnesota and this is the home page for his studio. Not as interesting as his music, but if you want to get a list of equipment to buy for your home studio this site will give you lots of ideas. Guess what symbol appears on the home page? * KFAI - Fresh Air Radio URL: http://www.mtn.org/KFAI/ It's nice to have an alternative to commercial radio - heck, it's nice to have an alternative to public radio! The home page looks better from Netscape than Lynx, but this feisty little community radio station provides interesting and fun information both on the air and the net. * news:rec.arts.wobegon URL: news:rec.arts.wobegon Speaking of public radio, Garrison Keillor created mythical Lake Wobegon on Minnesota Public Radio and road it to fame and fortune. Here's a net-stop for Keillor fans and those who yearn for an America that never was. * Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum URL: http://hudson.acad.umn.edu/ What do you say about a museum that looks like it should have a can-opener attached? Nice page, interesting exhibits. * The Raptor Center URL: http://www.raptor.cvm.umn.edu/ A medical / research center with solid educational programs on and off the net. * Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College URL: http://www.fdl.cc.mn.us/ Good source for Native American materials on the net and the Ojibwe / English translators on the gopher link are fun to try and educational. * SCSU WWW Gateway to Japan URL: http://condor.stcloud.msus.edu:20020/tojpn.html St. Cloud State University's Department of Foreign Languages sponsors a page of resources related to the Japanese language and culture. * 1994 Nobel Conference Information URL: http://www.gac.edu/nobel/ Since 1965 Gustavus Adolphus College has sponsored a lecture series about the great issues facing science and mankind. * Mayo Clinic URL: http://www.mayo.edu/ A massive collection of information about the research and educational programs of this world famous clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. * Faegre & Benson - Law Firm URL: http://ns.theinternet.com/faegre/ This page has a section devoted to Internet Law - don't miss the piece on Who Owns Your World Wide Web Home Page. * Antiques Oronoco URL: http://www.ic.mankato.mn.us/antiques/AOronoco.html Excellent source of information for collectors and dealers. If you are just beginning to get interested in antiques, you can Learn About Antiques on these pages. * Von Klopp Brew Shop URL: http://www.hps.com/Products/VonKlopp/Welcome.html This vendor has everything a home brewer might need and a really cute graphic image. The index also includes a extensive list of Internet access providers in Minnesota and links to their gopher and web servers. The providers list URL is: http://garnet.msen.com:70/0h/vendor/maven/mn/provide.html. If you would like to add your site to the index, please contact Dana Noonan at noonan@msus1.msus.edu. Resources for Web Pages It's time to add my list of favorites to the rapidly growing number of collections of tips and techniques for writing web pages. The following are some resources I have found useful. Don't blame the creators for my errors. HTML Documents Although you can find lots of sites offering advice on publishing web pages, Tim Allen provides a well-organized set of document links (and even new information) on this page. URL: http://kilburn.keene.edu/Internet/Hypertext/htmlDocs.html Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML Lemay, Laura. Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML in a Week. Sams. 1995. URL: http://slack.lne.com/lemay/theBook/ If you must have a book to help you learn HTML, this is the one to buy. Check out book info and Sample Chapter or read a review of the book before you buy it! Expert Software's Graphics Collections This company offers collections of high-quality, royalty free, full color images for both Windows and Macintosh at ridiculously low prices. The image at the top of this page came from 3500 Color Clip Art Images. The company also offers: 2000 Fonts, 3000 Image Photo Gallery, and Fantasy Images. The giant collections are on CD-ROM but there are a few smaller collections available on disk. Most of the collections retail for under $15. Expert Software can be contacted at expertsoft@aol.com or(305) 567-9990. Do not waste your money (as I did) on 7000 Clip Art Images from Crystalvision. Junk, junk, junk! If you wondered where all the collections of home-made clip art for Printshop ended up, this is it. For folks who care about copyright - we all should - this collection gives no indication of who owns what and what you can do with the images. Sandra's Clip Art Server This site offers links to sites offering Clip art on the net. Not all of the clip art is free. URL: http://mirror.wwa.com/mirror/catch/95/clipart.htm JASC Minnesota based JASC offers shareware graphics programs for Windows. Paint Shop Pro is an award winning graphics manipulation program that can be used to convert, crop, resample, and resize images. It can do another zillion things that I haven't tried quite yet. Media Center provides an easy way to create thumbnail albums of all your graphics files - even if they are on floppy disks or cd-roms. Although Expert Software provides programs to view its image collections, they are not all that good. Media Center can zip through different sections of 3500 Color Clip Art Images cd-rom and provide a quick album that you can save on disk. Although Paint Shop Pro has it's own very capable image previewer, Media Center can handle more forms of multi-media. URL: http://www.winternet.com/~jasc/ The Virtual Mirror This is a terrific webzine and frequently covers issues related to publishing on the net as well as books, film, and gardening. The list of new web sites is short but well-selected. URL: http://mirror.wwa.com/mirror/ For America Online Readers Only The Gopher gateway on AOL does not offer any obvious route to the Metronet Gopher server. Veronica searches for "metronet" list lots of things for Metronet (most in Texas) but none of the listings will connect to the Metronet server. Until AOL implements a way for users to type in an address of a specific gopher server, AOL users can get to the Metronet Gopher by doing a Veronica search for "msen vendor." If you click on the result, you will see Metronet on the list of vendors using MSEN as a service provider. _________________________________________________________________ LIBCAT / A Guide to Internet/Bitnet / Minnesota Internet Services Metronet Home Page / About Metronet / Write to Us _________________________________________________________________ Network News is sponsored by Metronet Copyright (c) 1995 Dana Noonan
