Government agencies have the opportunity to make available on the Internet a variety of publications and databases that could support their work, provide easy information access for both staff and the public, and show citizens and lawmakers concrete evidence of the progress they have made toward reaching their goals. The following list of state government servers includes both polished and "rough draft" information servers. Oregon Online offers a well-designed gopher and www server that maximizes production efficiency and information utility. It's manual for information providers is superb. California's Senate Gopher offers a different approach to Internet publishing that is a bit less complex than Oregon's but just as useful. Don't miss the demo of the "Internet Office." Texas and California have perhaps the most extensive and diverse sets of services and modes of operation. For folks who like the "information highway" metaphor the Texas "onramp" will be both familiar and inviting. California offers a bit more of a view of how government agencies really work and a lot less of the citizen sugar-coating found on many other services. South Dakota's multimedia homepage is one of the best designed (based on the familiar license plate). North Carolina State Library's Multimedia Encyclopedia shows how libraries can make use of the web to publish information from their archives. Hawaii's services have been available on the net longer than most states and well worth checking out. State servers could be improved by: 1. using sensible naming conventions - ie. www.state.us or gopher.state.us 2. limiting images of state seals, department logos, governors, buildings, and cute icon replacements for www bullets 3. including a bit of real information along with usual government manual and pr stuff The following links are available on the Metronet/Maven WWW server: URL: http://garnet.msen.com:70/0h/vendor/maven/inet1/nnews/states.html ALASKA Statewide Library Electronic Doorway (SLED) telnet://sled.alask.edu/ ARKANSAS AR Public School Computer Network gopher://hp.k12.ar.us/ CALIFORNIA State Government (CSGNET) http://www.ca.gov/ ftp://ftp.teale.ca.gov/ State Senate gopher://gopher.sen.ca.gov/ http://www.sen.ca.gov/ Legislative Information (FTP) ftp://leginfo.public.ca.gov/ Governor's Office of Emergency Services gopher://oes1.oes.gov:5555/ http://www.oes.ca.gov:8001/ Secretary of State gopher://secstate.public.ca.gov/ Department of Education gopher://goldmine.cdc.ca.gov/ Environmental Resources Evaluation System (CERES) http://agency.resource.ca.gov/ Department of Conservation http://agency.resource.ca.gov/doc.html Department of Fish and Game Natural Heritage Division http://spock.dfg.ca.gov/ Dept. of Forestry & Fire Protection http://oak.cdf.ca.gov/ Department of Transportation http://www.dot.ca.gov/ Department of Water Resources http://www.water.ca.gov/ - Div. of Planning http://locke.water.ca.gov/ - Snow Survey http://snow.water.ca.gov/ Public Utilities Commission gopher://gopher.cpuc.ca.gov/ ftp://ftp.cpuc.ca.gov/ State Lands Commission http://www.slc.ca.gov/ DELAWARE Delaware Public Library gopher://kentnet.dtcc.edu FLORIDA FL Information Resource Network (FIRN) gopher://gopher.firn.edu/ Dept. of Environmental Protection gopher://gopher.dep.state.fl.us/ HAWAII State of Hawaii http://hinc.hinc.hawaii.gov/soh_home.html Hawaii Inc. http://hinc.hinc.hawaii.gov/hinc/hawaii_inc.html Department of Education gopher://kalama.doe.hawaii.edu/ http://www.doe.hawaii.edu/ ILLINOIS State Board of Education (ISBE) gopher://isbe.state.il.us Public Domain Land Sales Archive (via Univ. of Illinois, Chicago) gopher://uicvm.cc.uic.edu/11/library/libdb/landsale INDIANA Department of Education gopher://ideanet.doe.state.in.us/ Higher Education Telecommunication System gopher://gopher.in.net/ KENTUCKY Commonwealth of Kentucky http://www.state.ky.us/ Department of Information Services gopher://gopher.state.ky.us/ LOUISIANA InfoLouisiana gopher://gopher.state.la.us/ MARYLAND Dept. of Library Services - Sailor gopher://sailor.lib.md.us/ MASSACHUSETTS MA Education Computer Network gopher://gopher.mass.edu/ MICHIGAN Governor's Office gopher://gopher.migov.state.mi.us/ Governor's Forum http://gopher.migov.state.mi.us/ Department of Education http://web.mde.state.mi.us:1024/ gopher://mdenet.mde.state.mi.us/ MINNESOTA State of Minnesota Gopher gopher://gopher.state.mn.us/ Minnesota Legislature gopher://gopher.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/ Department of Health gopher://gopher.health.state.mn.us/ Department of Transportation gopher://gopher.dot.state.mn.us/ MN Center for Arts Education gopher://gopher.mcae.k12.mn.us/ http//gopher.mcae.k12.mn.us/ Higher Education Coordinating Board gopher://gopher.hecb.state.mn.us/ InforMNs (k-12 Project) http://informns.k12.mn.us/ gopher://informns.k12.mn.us/ MISSOURI Department of Elementary and Secondary Education gopher://services.dese.state.mo.us/ MISSISSIPPI Central Data Processing Authority gopher://gopher.state.ms.us/ http://www.state.ms.us/ NEBRASKA Department of Education gopher://nde4.nde.state.ne.us/ Nebraska Online (NEON) telnet://neon.nlc.state.ne.us/ NEW YORK Government Information Locator gopher://unix2.nysed.gov/ State Library gopher://unix2.nysed.gov/ Archives & Records Administration gopher://unix6.nysed.gov/ Office of Telecommunications Policy Analysis and Development gopher://unix5.nysed.gov/ Department of Health gopher://gopher.health.state.ny.us/ Office of General Services - State Contracts Database http://ogs.nysernet.org/ State Education Department gopher://vm1.nysed.gov/ NORTH CAROLINA State Government Gopher gopher://gopher.sips.state.nc.us/ State of NC - Public Information http://www.sips.state.nc.us/ NC General Assembly gopher://ftp.legislature.state.nc.us/ State Library gopher://hal.ncdcr.gov/ http://hal.dcr.state.nc.us/ NC Dept. of Cultural Resources NC Information Network (NCIN) telnet://ncdcr.dcr.state.nc.us Note: login: slbb.guest password: guest OHIO Dept. of Education gopher://odevs1.ode.ohio.gov/ OH Educational Computer Network gopher://nwoca7.nwoca.ohio.gov/ OKLAHOMA Geological Survey Observatory gopher://wealaka.okgeosurvey1.gov/ State Regents Higher Education Net gopher://gopher.osrhe.edu/ OREGON Oregon Online http://www.state.or.us/ Oregon Online gopher://gopher.state.or.us/ State Archives Public Info. "I'm not certain if you list collections from archives, but I would appreciate it if you would list the first 2-3. Kansas State University Libraries is in the process of doing a complete retrospective conversion project. Recently, we have begun creating bibliographic records for the archival collections and hope to eventually have our finding aids available on-line. So, while not everything is searchable yet, it will be." from Special Collections The Cookery Collection (5000) The Mackenzie Linnaeana (1300) The Fred H. and Jeannette Higginson Robert Graves Collection (400) from University Archives Consumer Movement Archives Gail Kubik Manuscripts FAR-MAR-CO Records Clementine Paddleford Papers Dan Casement Papers Alice Nichols Papers Gordon Parks Papers Issac Goodnow Papers Velma Carson Papers =============================== RECOMMENDED READING AND PLAYING =============================== I must admit I am a sucker for any magazine with a cd-rom attached. I bought Visual Basic magazine even though I don't own the program (still happy using QBasic 4.5) because it was only $3.95. I'm so pleased with the cd-rom that I might buy the program someday. I've tried Nautilus (nice but over-priced), Substance digizine (a cross between Wired and a punk-zine), and other products that should and will remain nameless. Without a doubt it is the best bargain on the market is CD-ROM Today! For $7.95 you get a magazine with good articles and reviews and a CD-ROM that has both IBM and MAC demos, shareware, and Internet goodies. The IBM portion of the first disk had FAQs, selections from Project Gutenburg, Windows clients for the Internet as well as a selection of graphics, sounds, etc. The MAC section of the second disk contained a selection of classic MAC shareware including a version of Mosaic, hypercard stacks of Shakespeare and Kennedy Assassination, fonts, and much more. The Third disc issue included a bonus disc: a demo of Leonardo. The fourth cd-rom version of the magazine is now available and includes MAC demos of Exploring Ancient Cities, Hyperstudio, and Baseball's Greatest Hits; the IBM version features The Indian Question, 3D Home Architect, and Complete Baseball (and my personal favorite: Little Monster at School in both English and Spanish). The magazine staff tries to select working demos of programs that run on both MACs and IBMs such as Myst and Endangered Species. The first two issues (April-May and June-July 1994) contain the most Internet goodies, but all four issues are quite good. Subscription information: 6 issues 12 issues US $29.95 $49.95 Canada $39.95 $59.95 (Canadian $) Elsewhere $43.95 $74.95 (US $) Contact: CD-ROM Today GP Publications 1350 Old Bayshore Highway, Suite 210 Burlingame, CA 94010 Back issues are $7.95 plus $1.00 postage (US$).
