He also maintains an archive of related public domain and shareware files at FTP CCSUN.UNICAMP.BR or FTP 143.106.1.5 (better connection). Login as user anonymous and give your email address as a password. The files are in the pub/medicine directory. Note: files ending in ZIP require binary transfer and are intended for IBM compatible micros. ========= FTP SITES ========= BYTE magazine's monthly featured programs are available on UUNET. FTP ftp.uu.net and look in the published/byte directory. HANDICAP NEWS ARCHIVES - a remarkable site covering a wide range of materials including Americans with Disabilities Act materials FTP handicap.shel.isc-br.com (129.189.4.184) SMALL BUSINESS FTP freedom.nmsu.edu (128.123.1.19) in pub/ibm/business directory Currently only one file sbafacts.exe - Small Business facts (laws, etc) and it is for the IBM PC - and it is a self-extracting archive.. Send a message to: mail-server@nisc.sri.com. In the body type: "SEND draft-ietf-userglos-glossary-00.txt". HOLOCAUST ARCHIVE Files related to the collective events known as the Holocaust are now available from The Old Frog's Almanac via listserv. To obtain a current list of available material, address your message to: listserv@oneb.almanac.bc.ca and include the single line index holocaust A recent copy of Almanac Holocaust files may be obtained via anonymous ftp from menora.weizmann.ac.il, as /pub/texts/lest.we.forget/oneb-txt.tar.Z ================== MISCELLANEOUS TIPS ================== A quick and dirty way to find out if there is a list on a topic of interest to you is to send the following mail to listserv@bitnic.bitnet: list global /topic for example: list global /africa VAX users may want to try the following command to see a list of available system-wide commands: SHOW SYMBOL/GLOBAL/ALL. This is how I discovered the local ARCHIE and GOPHER. Beats having to remember the telnet addresses. If you added commands to login.com, they will be interspersed in the list. Caveat: Don't try system-wide commands you can't figure out - it can be dangerous. ==================================== BOOKSTORES AND PUBLISHERS ON THE NET ==================================== From: misc.books.technical,alt.books.technical Computer Literacy Bookshop, 2590 N 1st St, San Jose CA 95131 tel +1 408 435 1118, fax +1 408 435 0689 e-mail orders@clbooks.com (for orders) service@clbooks.com (status/problems) info@clbooks.com (other info/requests) O'Reilly & Associates (publisher of Krol's THE WHOLE INTERNET) book-info@ora.com also gopher.ora.com 1-800-998-9938 Quantum Books, 4 Cambridge Center, Cambridge MA 02141 tel +1 617 494 5042, fax +1 617 577 7282, e-mail quanbook@world.std.com Stanford University Bookstore (415) 329-1217 bookstore@sierra.stanford.edu Note: bookstore catalog is available via the Stanford OPAC. The bulletin boards run by institutions, companies, and individuals include a wealth of useful information and contacts. The following list of toll free (within the US or selected regions of the US) bulletin boards may be of interest: COOPERATIVE LEARNING BBS - David and Roger Johnson of the University of Minnesota run this BBS devoted to cooperative learning in schools. Includes an interesting paper: "Cooperative Learning in Culturally Diverse Classrooms." 1-800-457-7227 (300-2400 baud) DIAL JAN (Job Accommodation Network) BBS has lots of materials on the Americans with Disabilities Act. 1-800-342-5526 (300-2400 baud) FLORIDA RECYLCING MARKETING SYSTEM BBS is not just for Florida. It's a great source of contacts for buyers/sellers of recycled products. 1-800-348-1239 (2400 baud) GRATEFUL MED ELECTRONIC SERVICE DESK includes an email link to the National Library of Medicine and a few demo and help files. 1-800-525-5756 (300-9600 baud) LEGALNET (Stetson University) has the expected law-related files but also the Aids Daily News Summary and a number of hypertext files (Clinton campaign book, Torah - in Hebrew, citizenship training, US Constitution). Try it. 1-800-624-9091 (2400-14400 baud) or 1-813-343-0543 OERI BBS (US Dept. of Education) is hard to get on but worth the effort. Lots of up-to-date statistics, so-so shareware and public domain programs for IBMs and Apples, and a smattering of education related conferences. 1-800-222-4922 (2400 baud) ORIGINS (Oklahoma Resources Integrated General Information Network System) BBS is an excellent example of an economic bulletin board. It is the product of a joint effort by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, the University of Oklahoma, and the Extension Service of Oklahoma State University. Although most of the information is related to Oklahoma and its regions, the BBS also has a selection of files/databases/cdroms covering economic statistics for the entire USA. I recommend the BBS as a model for others interested in providing online information services - especially for the implementation of databases. 1-800-765-6552 (300-14400 baud) PENNY-WISE BBS - the online equivalent of the Home (Office) Shopping Network. No gold chains but low prices on offices supplies/equipment and free delivery. This is not a recommendation to buy from these folks, I haven't used the service. 1-800-752-3012 (300-2400 baud) or 1-301-699-1000 SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION BBS is a treasure trove of information for folks interested in business and economics. Lots of useful text files and a smattering of IBM shareware and public domain programs. Excellent conference discussions. The 800 connection is funded by Sprint. 1-800-697-4636 (9600 baud) or 1-800-859-4636 (2400 baud) TOWN HALL BBS is conservative America's very own BBS. See articles from National Review the day the publication goes to print. Scan the conservative calendar of events (where else can you learn about the birthday bash for Dan Qualye on February 4th). Gateways to DIALOG and other information sources all for only $20/12 hours a month. Premium services cost extra. This is a must see for all online trekkers - it will either give you the willies or hope for the future! Logon as TAKE to take a peek at what's online. 1-800-648-6964 (300-2400 baud) WASTEWATER TREATMENT INFORMATION EXCHANGE BBS is a bit specialized, but if you are interested in the topic it's a fine source of information, calendars, and contacts. 1-800-544-1936 =================== RECOMMENDED READING =================== COPYRIGHT GUIDE FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS by Richard Weisgrau & Michael Remer, Esq. Copyright ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers, Inc.) 1991. Available from Don Smith (dsp@halcyon.halcyon.com). I.R.I.F.U. (I read it for U!) is an intriguing publication from France about IBM and MAC computers. The author (jb@paris7.jussieu.fr) scans the French computer mags and summarizes the contents. The publication appears on Usenet's comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc.and comp.sys.mac.misc. A lot more interesting and up-to-date than some of the pc mags I scan. "OCLC's Linking Strategy: Internet and NREN" is available via anonymous ftp from zeus.rsch.oclc.org in directory: pub/white_papers Jean Polly's SURFING THE INTERNET v2 is now available via anonymous ftp from nysernet.org in the /pub/resources/guides directory. The file is surfing.the.internet.2.0.txt. ============ JUST FOR FUN ============ Folks with IBM computers may want to grab a copy of XMASLEM.ZIP from MetroLine or one of the Internet sites that carry it. Check Archie for Internet sites (for example, ftp.ulowell.edu in the /msdos/Games/Demos directory). This is a special holiday version of Lemmings complete with sound board support and four levels of play. Lots of fun! ================ NEW ON METROLINE ================ New conferences on MetroLine: Minnesota Citizens Online and Health Science Libraries of Minnesota (soon). In preparation for the Martin Luther King holiday "diversity" file and bulletin areas will be created soon. The one-page "tip-sheet" for local OPACS can be obtained from the Metronet office or Kim Scannell at Metropolitan State University (772-7731). Kim also has the schedule of free online workshops at Metropolitan State University. =============================================================================== Metronet is not responsible for the content of the newsletter - just me!
