TS-DACS would like to thank the archival community for the thoughtful
feedback provided in response to an April 2015 change proposal which sought
to disambiguate and clarify various uses of the word “level” in the
standard. These responses did not indicate a clear consensus in regards to
either the overall direction or specific language of the change proposal.
As a result of this feedback, TS-DACS has opted to reject the change
proposal. We believe that further discussion of the concept of “level” --
as both an element of description and as a term that is often used to mean
an aggregation of records -- is warranted, but that we would be wise to
delay decisions around this issue until the ongoing work of international
standards-making bodies such as the International Council on Archives
Expert Group on Archival Description is further along.

The subcommittee will be focusing its efforts this coming year on improving
education offerings around DACS, taking an in-depth look at the standard’s
principles, and increasing the transparency of the revision process. We’ll
be reaching out to the community as we move forward on these efforts, so
stay tuned for further updates and opportunities to participate!
