Reading out of context, it seems to me that "discovery system" is a fancy term for an index of (library) content; technically speaking, all of the "discovery systems" are based on variations of Lucene or Solr -- indexers as opposed to databases. They are tools for finding as opposed to tools used to determine what a library owns -- inventory systems. "Discovery systems" are also tools that have put Web 2.0 features on bibliographic data. They are an incremental evolution of the venerable library catalog. --ELM
