The University of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Libraries seek an innovative and service-oriented individual for the position of Metadata Librarian, a key position for our growing digital library services and initiatives. In collaboration with cataloging leadership, subject specialists and digital library developers, he/she will specify and coordinate the application of appropriate descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for digitized and born-digital content managed by the Libraries
Under the general direction of the Head, Digital Library Services Department, position responsibilities include:
* Working closely with collection managers, subject specialists, and catalogers to advise on policies, standards and workflows for acquisition, description, and preservation of digital collections including text, music, images, audio, video and research data
* Providing training to staff related to non-MARC metadata creation and assisting in other departmental training initiatives
* Developing architecture for managing and integrating heterogeneous metadata, including MARC and non-MARC formats to facilitate interoperable discovery across systems
* Designing and/or adapting XML schemas, XSLT stylesheets, and RDF ontologies for digital systems and projects
* Participating in the design and development of services to support preservation of and access to digitized and born-digital content from Notre Dame collections
* Serving as a liaison between the Digital Library Services Department and internal and external partners on collaborative metadata projects
* Becoming an expert in the standard VIVO ontologies and local adaptations needed for ND VIVO development
* Assessing the requirements for the new data sets to add to library digital repository, identifying and assessing potential data sources and working with data owners to add data incrementally to library digital repository
* Working with domain experts to understand the structure and relationships of data sets, and design a representative ontology
* Collaborating with local, national, and international partners on research to advance the use of appropriate metadata use for digital library services. Keeps abreast of emerging standards and tools
The Metadata Librarian will lead projects, workflow design and training involving metadata and use of metadata in digital repositories and other discovery systems. The position will participate in national and international discussions about the emerging and dynamic role of metadata in providing access to information resources. This position will help develop new approaches to describing and managing research data and other digital collections to support researchers in various disciplines.
The Digital Library Services Department is a creative and dynamic group which develops and supports a Fedora-based digital collections repository, providing curation and access to a wide range of digital content and media through both custom interfaces and through existing discovery systems. The Department supports data management and curation for researchers in collaboration with the University's DigitalND Office and the Center for Research Computing. Initiatives include university and grant funded projects in addition to support for library collections and resources.

Required Qualifications:
* ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff and students. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic environment and on a variety of simultaneous projects.
* Minimum 2 years experience working with standard metadata formats (e.g., MARC, EAD, VRACore, METS, MODS, PREMIS).
* Experience selecting and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies to digital library projects. Familiarity with data interchange standards (e.g., OAI-PMH, SRW/U).
Desired Qualifications:
* Demonstrated success with grant-writing
* Three years of academic library experience
* Experience with developing standards and recommendations in archival curation and related metadata management, including linked data
* Experience with repository, archival, and/or indexing systems such as Fedora, DSpace, Solr, or Lucene
* Experience with scholarly communication needs such as copyright expertise, faculty publications and/or conference papers services
