Given that LC is starting the work to transition to a post-MARC21
bibliographic framework (http://www.loc.gov/marc/transition/), I highly
recommend Karen Coyle's article in the latest issue of the Code4Lib Journal
at http://journal.code4lib.org/articles/5468. She discusses her attempts to
identify the data elements that are contained in MARC. There are many of
these due to the large number of subfields and indicators and the
complicated interactions between MARC and AACR2/RDA/ISBD. It's a tangled
thread to unravel, but one that will be important to grasp moving forward.
