Thanks for the pointers, Jim. Alas, I don't even see the word
"Literature" on the home pages of Ipl2 and Intute--this is a great
example of how librarian-speak and academic-speak may differ from the
way the world at large thinks. So why I want separate academic and
pubiib systems, even thought the two should be intertwined and both
rely on a third organization for technical services (in the Net sense
more than the library one).

You're absolutely right about the challenges ahead. National tastes
vary, so I would suggest focusing on U.S. needs foremost even though
the library should be open to the entire world to access, within the
limits of copyright law. Remember, other countries already have their
own systems. But I love the idea of international participation, from
the start, in forums; otherwise the system would be dumbed down
compared to the Net at large. If the forums could be blended in with
those overseas, then so much the better.

The National Digital Library would need massive participation among many librarians and scholars, hopefully from around the world. I think the primary difficulty is to resolve issues of so-called "quality selection": what it is and how to do it. If something can be selected, it can be cataloged but it all must be done coooperatively. A lot of it, I think, is setting up and managing a shared cataloging workflow, but that is another matter.

I was hoping that somehow it could grow into a type of national/international digital library system but unfortunately, because of the economic meltdown in the UK, it lost its funding and will be shut down in July. http://www.intute.ac.uk <http://www.intute.ac.uk/> This is really a disaster because it was so well done. There is also Infomine, which is primarily for universities http://infomine.ucr.edu <http://infomine.ucr.edu/>. I made a tool to help me utilize these tools at http://www.galileo.aur.it/opac-tmpl/npl/en/pages/news/latestwebsites.html and some others, which provides the RSS feeds to get the newest site listings.
