We use $y to hide the URLs and give a clear indication of what link will get the patron to the full text, sound recording, etc.
For serials we use links to SFX, which lists the choices for a title:
85640 $y Click here for FULL TEXT options $u http://sfx.fcla.edu/ucf?sid=sfx%3Ae%5Fcollection&issn=0028-4793
For other things we replace "options" with "from" plus the provider name.
85640 $y Click here for FULL TEXT from SpringerLink $u http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-1-60761-934-5
I have not seen $i used in an 856, but it is commonly used in the 246 and 776, at least for e-resources cataloged according to aggregator/provider-neutral guidelines.

Subject: [NGC4LIB] MARC 856 question
I know that this is a "maybe, sortta" kind of question, but in creating an 856 field that needs a particular display ("Click here for x"), can I assume that most systems will take that from a 856 $y? Does anyone use the $i for display?
Thx,
kc
