“Diving into the Deep End”: What are the consequences for users of the new
discovery tools and their reliance upon relevancy-ranked results coming from
large results sets?
Has your library adopted a web-scale discovery service to provide articles
and local resources to your users in a single interface? Are you looking for
an opportunity to present at ALA? The RUSA/RSS Catalog Use Committee is
seeking two additional presenters (we have one already) for our upcoming
discussion forum at ALA Annual 2011: "Diving into the Deep End."
Specifically, we are looking for presenters who have experience guiding
their users at the reference desk (in any type of library), but would
particularly like to hear from someone with experience introducing these
systems to older users, perhaps as a faculty liaison or in an adult learning
setting.
Presentations are in panel format, but relatively informal, with each of
three presenters talking for 15-20 minutes, with time for discussion after
each speaker and at the end.
The discussion forum will be held Saturday, June 25, 2011, 4-5:30 p.m. at
the ALA Annual conference in New Orleans. If you are interested in serving
as a panelist, please contact Steve Ostrem (steve-ostrem_at_uiowa.edu) with a
short summary by May 31, 2011. The committee will notify all potential
speakers by June 10th.
