A few days ago I started looking at how to incorporate Ex Libris results in
VIRGO, the University of Virginia's Blacklight implementation. Pagination
was an area that concerned me, though I see how FCLA's workaround might do.
Other features that cause concern for me when blending results:
1. Paging through individual results. It looks like Mango doesn't do this
(unless I'm missing something), but Blacklight offers Previous and Next
links to step through individual results, and I'm not at all sure how to
make that work with blended results. It's not that elegant in Blacklight to
begin with -- when you click to view a document, the original search and
counter are stashed in session, and then the Previous and Next links adjust
the counter and perform the original search (set to return only one document).
2. Facet blending. Primo's facets aren't the same as U.Va.'s facets.
Sometimes they are similar (e.g. - author), but the facets are not named the
same, and the logic for constructing the values may be significantly
different. To what extent is blending of facet values achievable? I don't
have the answers yet, but every solution that I can dream up seems fragile
at best.
Josh, if you have any further comments on either of these, I'd love to hear
them.
Thanks,
Molly
