Head, Knowledge Access Design and Development
The head of this newly conceived department will lead a service-focused
team in designing, implementing, and assessing an array of
metadata-reliant processes and other strategies for enabling
intellectual access to the research resources in all formats of the NYU
Division of Libraries. The Head of Knowledge Access Design and
Development is a member of the Knowledge Access and Resource Management
Services (KARMS) management team, which facilitates the teaching,
learning and research endeavors of the Libraries' user communities
through processes and services in program areas that include library
acquisitions, licensing, serials and electronic resource management, and
cataloging and metadata production, integration, and maintenance. In
collaboration with our colleagues in Collections and Research Services,
Public Services, Libraries IT Services, and Digital Library Technology
Services, KARMS has primary leadership responsibility for knowledge
access via the Libraries' dynamic, integrated discovery and access systems.
In addition to serving NYU's central and institute libraries, KARMS
provides selected services to consortial member libraries. The Knowledge
Access Design and Development unit comprises primarily six full-time
librarians and three librarians who have complementary assignments in
KARMS and Collections and Research Services.
While leading the design and development of knowledge access strategies
for the NYU Libraries, the successful candidate will also:
- work with members of the Knowledge Access Design and Development
unit to enact a culture of experimentation, innovation, assessment, and
best-practice definition in designing and developing metadata-reliant
processes and other knowledge access strategies
- bring out the best in Knowledge Access Design and Development unit
members through the daily practice of leading by example, coaching, open
and honest dialog, and prompt feedback
- collaborate with other members of the KARMS management team in the
ongoing improvement of KARMS automated and manual processes to meet
institutional goals and improve service to end users and library colleagues
- contribute knowledge access expertise to library and NYU campus
partner initiatives; lead library initiatives and projects that have a
knowledge access emphasis
- engage in professional activities, especially those related to
library data, user-centered service design, etc.
Collections curated, managed, interpreted, and preserved by the NYU
Libraries include in round numbers 5 million book volumes, 100,000
serial subscriptions including 90,000 electronic journals, a half
million electronic books, 30,000 linear feet of archival materials,
1,700,000 photographs or photo negatives, well over 100,000 audio and
video recordings in a variety of physical formats, and 250,000 digital
resources (occupying over 100 terabytes) in about 30 collections. As NYU
Libraries devote more resources to acquiring specialized and unique
resources while maintaining core collection strengths, the Head,
Knowledge Access Design and Development, will play a key role in
nurturing an integrated discovery and access environment that
encompasses all types of resources, collections, and metadata. To that
end, the Libraries currently deploy the Ex Libris Aleph integrated
library system using PRIMO as its primary end-user access system in
conjunction with an array of related tools to enhance users' knowledge
discovery and access capabilities.
