Put another way, the article alludes to the fact that books are not timeless and long-lasting as their content. It is not about the telegraph as much as it is about communication. It is not about the train as much as it is about transportation. It is not about the phonograph record as much as it is the emotions they make us feel. The former things are mediums. The later are the things of greater lasting value. If we do not want our profession to be marginalized, then we need to be dealing with timeless issues to a greater extent. Library catalogs need to change and be better integrated with our respective communities in order to reflect the current sea change.
