One more calculation, to give a sense of how completely processing,
disk space and bandwidth have surpassed library needs.
Google recently calculated that, in the history of the world,
129,864,880 books have been published. It's a rough estimate, but the
right order of magnitude. (See http://bit.ly/aTLeS4)
If every book had a MARC record, and they averaged 927 byes (see
previous email), that would amount to 112 GB of data.
So the metadata for every book ever published would fit on an iPod
classic—with 48 GB left over.
Best,
Tim
