This is again just one aspect of what controlled authorities can do for 
you, but I think it's a fairly simple thing with some benefit. It will 
slow down indexing a bit, depending on how cleverly you can do it, but 
shouldn't slow down actual query performance at all.

can put controlled vocabulary to, which help me at least approach 
thinking about how best to enable them in modern search interfaces, see:
