Hi Ebe,
I'm glad you asked this question, because I'm curious too. Having failed to find what I consider a proper term, I have been using, "Single Search Options." I don't remember where I picked it up. Please share with the rest of us if you get answers off-list.
Thanks,
Jimmie

Subject: [NGC4LIB] Discovery layer and presentation layer question
Hello all,
I have also been one of the lurkers. My main reason for not posting is that
I just don't have the time. I barely get a couple of emails read while I
gulp down lunch. Anyway onto my question since this is directly work related
I can do this now.
I am asking for advise from all the knowledgeable people out there. I am
starting to grapple more and more with terminology and definitions. My
understanding is that when first the 'next generation interfaces' appeared
that they we thought of as that or the terms I have seen used were discovery
layer (beacuse they helped users discover resources better than in a
traditional OPAC). I think I may also have seen the term presentation layer.
Now with the advent of Ex Libris' Primo Central, Serials Solution's Summon
and Ebsco's EDS which all index individual journal articles into single
indexes (along with the library catalogue and any other datatbase the
library would like) that these are taking the mantle of discovery layers.
They of course also have their own interfaces. Yet they can also be 'behind'
other interfaces like Ex Libris' Primo, any Library developed Vufind,
Acquabrowser interface, III's Encore etc. I have started thinking of these
as presentation layers just to draw out the difference. To me there is a
difference - do others see this as well? Am I trying to be too granular? Is
there better terminology? or......?
Cheers,
Ebe
