Re: eContent synchronization

Thanks Matt,

The patron was looking for issues from the 1970's so that is why I found this record. Since this is not a copyrighted publication, are there any plans to allow access (even for previous title issues)? Is this waiting on the Google Books settlement? I noticed that Google is the only holder on #297440731. Will Google allow subscription access?  This may not be a popular publication but for certain types of work it contains very valuable but elusive information.

Thanks for sending me on a walk down memory lain as my old cataloger
nature came out and I tracked down how this particular record came into
existence.

We receive records from member libraries in mass dig projects. We use
the OCLC# in these records to locate the physical record and then create
an e record. In this case U Mich sent us OCLC # 19537507 as the physical
record for this digitized journal. We parked it until Google sent us
their record with the links to the digitized volumes. Once that arrived
we pulled OCLC record 19537507 and created the e record. All of this is
done programmatically.

What is interesting in this case is a variation from the record in
MIRLYN at U Mich and the OCLC record. MIRLYN has the 245 title as
Natural resources law with a 247 for title varies with Laws relating to
conservation. I'm not a serials cataloging expert but that should make
their record "ok" for including these digitized copies. The OCLC record
instead has a 780 00 for Preceding / Continues, which then makes the
record appear to be in error. Neither MIRLYN or WorldCat have a separate
record for either the former or variant title (depending on what the
cataloger has determined this to be) so a record would have to be
created from scratch for that title.

To date we have created over 4.6 million e records based on feeds from
Google and Hathi Trust which is why this is done programmatically. I
hope my explanation clarifies what happened here.

Thanks for the clarification. When OCLC created MARC record #297440731
for Google why did it add nineteen 856 links for issues of previous
titles?  This MARC record is a description of a printed serial that
began in 1968 but all nineteen 856 links are for issues published prior
to 1968. There are no links to issues of the described serial. The
008/34 field indicates that this record reflects a successive entry
convention not latest entry. Thanks.

OCLC creates the MARC records for Google and syncs with both Google and
Hathi Trust. New records are added every day to WorldCat from both
repositories. Currently there are over 4.5 million e-book MARC records
in WorldCat.
