Another possibility, and possibly more understandable since it avoids all the FRBR concepts, would be to use the current BIBCO standards http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/bibco/core2002.html and translate these into everyday language, eliminating some of the more bizarre fields, e.g. the fixed fields.
