Actually, I'm not sure this exactly the conclusion you should be
drawing from the crux of your email.  The MARC-to-MODS XSLTs are
extremely adept at gleaning the actual data from our legacy MARC
records and putting them into a more semantically rich data structure.
 I would say this is generally good and useful.

That's different than saying that MODS is a a good or useful
destination (and, again, I go back to my point that it's moot once
you've gotten to this stage).

I think it's far more useful to focus on the XSLT (since that's where
the really important stuff is happening for MODS) than the actual
output document.
