DNB is working - together with OCLC and the LoC - on the
VIAF-Project. The authority files for persons (PND) and subject
headings (SWD) they just opened are all-DNB(tm) ;-)

After releasing our bibliographic data under CC0 we (=a working group
in our regional library center hbz with Adrian et al.) are tackling
the next milestone on our road to "linked" open data - URI's and
identifiers for manifestations of a given work. Should we use

a) our own ID's and risk fragmentation
b) re-use an already existing ID and try to import it into our data
c) use a match-key algorithm to generate a unique ID from a given
record, develop one and prove it's *really* good ;-)

Proprietary ID's like VIAF and OCLC-ID's are a no-go, of course. Using
proprietary ID's in linked *open* data is a contradiction in itself...

Also there is a need for a "global" Identifier, leaving b) and c).

ID's from OpenLibrary might be a good idea. The data is open, so we
could match-and-merge its ID's into our own data. For all our record's
that aren't in OL we could upload it, get an ID and use it locally.

This would be a perfect symbiosis - each project contributing to the
other ;-)

I just started to evaluate whether OL is suitable to act as a
ID-automata to put in a record (search or upload) and get back
an ID for local reuse.

Of course there would be lot's of work to be done. Persistence of
identifiers, differences between cataloguing in Germany (RAK) and
elsewhere (AACR2), and so on.

Perhaps someone from OL is listening and can give me some feedback;-)

Regards,

O. Flimm
