I have also similar (anecdotal) evidence within product usability
testing sessions and elsewhere.  I tend to think of academic roles as
informing content and overall strategy while more cross-cutting
groupings (like Alan Cooper's "Perpetual Intermediates") roles as
being more useful in considering design implementation details.
