One of the approaches I've seen used by other science data systems that 
might be of interest is using software revision management tools.  In the 
case of the Virtual Magnetospheric Observatory, they use git:

 	http://vmo.nasa.gov/scm/git/

If you can't consistently order the dumps from your catalog, it might get 
messy, though.
