I disagree, it isn't fear - it's more co-dependence. Our processing and
services (especially ILL) infrastructure is heavily dependent on the
long relationship the library has had with OCLC. At the U. of Oregon we
also rely heavily on Innovative Interfaces, so this kerfuffle creates an
interesting dynamic for us. Our users rely on both of those products to
meet their research, teaching and educational needs. We cannot lightly
cast either aside.
Are they perfect? No. Am I exploring all our options? Yes.
But I need to say that, for me, "just" is a four letter word. Whenever I
see it I see unsaid infrastructure, staffing, capital investment costs
and management issues lurking in the background. I'm not a Luddite, nor
do I fear change. But I am a middle manager who has to address the
confluence of the political, social and economic aspects of that change.
"Just" doesn't exist in my world.
