Thanks again. I definitely need to find out more about how Blacklight works when I can.
To be clear, though, I wasn't only comparing those two files in order to do my un-scientific testing, I was actually performing a few different searches (I only resorted to looking at the MARCXML version of the record since I didn't know how to get a "full view" of what was indexed).
Here's another example, which retrieves zero results:
http://virgobeta.lib.virginia.edu/catalog?q=Poynter+fellowship+at+Indiana+University&qt=search
But that exact phrase ("Poynter fellowship at Indiana University") appears in the EAD for the Merrill D. Peterson Papers:
http://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaead/published/uva-sc/viu01901.xml (/ead/archdesc/bioghist/p[3])
But, you're definitely right: I still don't know what's being indexed by Blacklight.
Of course, I know that the entire EAD can be indexed, as evidenced by the NWDA site (http://nwda.projectblacklight.org/). But in that case, I don't think that they're mixing up MARC records, EAD records, etc. (and that, really, was the impetus behind my question).
In any event, I'll certainly try to follow up with someone there in order to figure out more about it,
Mark

Just because the .xml version does not show you the EAD does not mean
it's not being indexed. I believe they are indexing both MARC and EAD
associated with a single 'record'; the .xml view in BL is only showing
you the MARC, but the EAD is being indexed as well. But you'd have to
talk to them for details, perhaps I'm wrong, but looking at that ".xml"
is not sufficient reverse engineering, that's not showing you a
representation of what's been indexed for that record, it's just showing
you a MARC xml representation that may not represent everything that's
been indexed.

All of that information is being pulled from other sections of the EAD that they had also decided to index (still, I don't think that they're including the <dsc> sections of the EAD).

Right now, AquaBrowser and the TRLN Endeca-based system are still the only two live implementations that I know of that are searching full MARC records side-by-side with full EAD records. I think that Blacklight is capable of this "out-of-the-box" as well, but I just don't know of any live sites that are indexing both.
