Subject: Re: [NGC4LIB] The Dewey Dilemma
<SNIP>
I have gone back and forth about the utility of retaining the
classification *number* in an online environment and I have argued
strenuously against them in the past, but I think I have changed (for
the moment!) and see their use more as a handy ordering device behind
the scenes for the associated text that describes the subject (the
label). For example, "Abnaki Indians" with E99.A13, the number would be
used primarily for arranging the different headings for browsing, which
gets away from alphabetical arrangement or the handmade BT/RT/NT, and
the number may not even have to display.
But I don't know.

I class our catalogued Web sites specifically to enable online browsing
by our instructors and students. I figure the instructors at least know
the class numbers of interest to them so I can provide a Web page with a
classed list of catalogued sites
<http://www.brazosport.edu/sites/CurrentStudents/Library/Library/website
s.aspx - I wish my db software sorted the numbers better> and the
classed sites mix in with the physical items if they are perusing our
catalog by class number. The class system is an intellectually based
endeavor, not just a mark and park convenience.
