In our library <http://biblioteca.mty.itesm.mx/>, we asked HOW they used
the library in addition to how often. For this we posted a volunteer at
the library exit during two "typical" weeks, and "caught" patrons to ask
them about what they did during their visit.
The results of this not-very-scientific experiment yielded this: even
though some used the library very frequently, the majority of those
asked were not in the library to use it as an information resource, but
more as a meeting point (looking for another student, do homework with
others), and other services (use the printers, read email on the public
terminals, use the restrooms), etc. Many had stayed at the library for
just a few minutes.
Another study had us following users around (at a distance) and mapping
where they ended up. Also, the majority ended up at study areas,
internet public terminals and the restrooms instead of reference,
circulation and the OPAC terminals =)
Still, the affluence was so large at the time we were still happy with
relatively small percentage actually using our "specialized" services =)
