Regarding the ability to link to a record in the catalog, the reQuest statewide library catalog serving CT does provide that capability.  Here is one example:

http://rqst-agent.auto-graphics.com/AGRssService/RssService.svc/Go2FullRecord/4903037/125/12187/rqst 

When you display the full record, the user can either copy the link or email the link (with or without its associated holdings).

I don't recall the details, but something in the back of my mind is 
telling me that the sessions exist because we didn't want vendors to use 
cookies on public access terminals. Does anyone else remember that? I 
believe the idea of the session-based URL was to retain the session 
without leaving anything on the computer.
