Some information on the Europeana project:

P. 3-4:
'Europeana now gives direct access through a multilingual interface to a
unique supply of more than 4.6 million digitised books, newspapers, film
clips, maps, photographs and documents from Europe's libraries, archives,
museums and audiovisual archives[…]
At present, more than 1000 cultural institutions contribute content to
Europeana (directly or through aggregators) and more than 150 institutions
are participating in its partner network. This collaboration between
different types of cultural institutions achieved through Europeana is
unprecedented in its scale and potential. The expanding list of cultural
institutions offering to make their content accessible through the service
shows the strength of this potential and the commitment to the Europeana
vision. Europeana has found a way to provide direct accessto Europe's
diverse cultural collections, while at the same time preserving the
visibility ofthese institutions to the end-user. Collaboration could be
extended to other initiatives around the globe, such as the World Digital
Library.'

Subject: Public consultation on the future of Europeana
Dear LIBER members,
The European Commission has issued the Communication "Europeana - next
steps" (EN, FR, DE; accompanying Staff Working Document EN) which looks
ahead to the next phase of development of Europeana and its orientation for
the future.
The public consultation launches a debate on the further development of
Europeana. The questions of the consultation deal amongst other things with
the way in which the private sector can be involved in the further
development of Europeana through public private partnerships, and how
in-copyright content can be made searchable through Europeana. Questions for
consultation EN, FR, DE (closing date: 15 November 2009). Replies can be
sent to : ec-digital-libraries_at_ec.europa.eu
LIBER is currently preparing a response to this public consultation on the
future of Europeana. This response will be sent for comments to the LIBER
members by the end of October. LIBER will then integrate the comments
received from the members and send the final response to the EC by 15
November.
As always, individual libraries can also reply individually to the EC, using
the LIBER response as a model and customising it according to their wishes.
Kindest regards,
W
