I have been told by circ staff at public libraries that this is the
case. In fact, self-check appears to provide increased privacy for
library users, as evidenced by this increase in circulation of
self-help and 'embarassing' popular medical books. If public libraries
carried porn, it, too, would be enjoying increased circulation. :-)
