Or the dynamic might be even simpler than that.  If you make it easier
for patrons to actually obtain what 'they've found, it is also
reasonable to think use may go up. Some patrons may prefer not to wait
in lines or deal with people when checking things out.

I've always wondered if self check disproportionately increases
circulation of materials people might be embarrassed to take to the
desk. Based on internet usage patterns, there is reason to believe
this may be the case...
