I agree with Michael.
In my opinion, Google Books is not a threat in terms of creating huge
original cataloging backlogs for the participating libraries. From my
limited experience working for Google Digitization project at the University
of Illinois Library, the large academic and research libraries that partner
with Google are responsible for cataloging at the fullest level possible the
items (often sitting for years in their cataloging backlogs) selected by
Google for digitization from their collections. These libraries are actually
killing two birds with one stone, because participation in Google
Digitization project helps reducing their original cataloging backlogs and
improving the metadata quality for the items catalogued decades ago. The
bibliographic records for items selected by Google are then available in
OCLC for any other library to use in their copy cataloging process.
