Third try.

My new email address got me rejected when I sent this to the list. I subscribed again, no luck. Hopefully the very helpful list manager, Eric, and Paul have fixed the address. Thanks!

A similar thing happened to me when the record in OCLC attributed the title Travels of a Lady's Maid to Augustine Birrell, oclc#9750462. The note in the record is simply "Conjecturally attributed to Augustine Birrell" but nothing is given to substantiate this.

The copy at the Lenox Library in Lenox, Mass. has Caroline Phelps Stokes' name penciled on the title page. The archival collection of Stokes' papers at Radcliffe College and her listing in Famous American Women attribute this title to her, published pseudonymously after her death. I noted that in the record as substantiating her as the author.

I wasn't sure if I could/should edit the existing OCLC record. I did another OCLC record for this title with this information, oclc#428978286. It's there too for anyone researching these authors and this title.

All I can find from my home is the same record you are looking at, where we get the semi-nonsensical note
"Attributed to Henry Steel Olcott; no attribution by Sabin."

Which doesn't say who attributes authorship to Olcott other than the cataloger. The records I have seen refer to the Gale electronic version (which I do not have access to) but the 040 is:
040: $a TGPSM $c UtOrBLW

The transcribing library $c is Backstage Library Works, but I can't find the original agency.

So, the cataloger did some work (looking in Sabin), but not enough, and then everybody just accepted the record until you came along. Congrats! There may be a hand-written note in the copy that was originally cataloged that says that it is authored by Olcott, but that needs to be stated clearly.

Looks like a case of cataloger error to me. .
