I think too that it's terribly on-topic; let me put it this way, if
libraries truly aren't book stores (as hailed in every argument raised
to look to the commercial world for examples of how libraries can
improve), the lack of a long-tail would put you all out of work. The
long-tail is the reason libraries exists! Not thinking about these
things when creating library systems (as we do here on code4lib) would
be disastrous, but in fact, I think most of us do even if we're not
calling it as such.
