In the examples below, the suggested string--the preferred access point
used by the library--might itself be ambiguous to the searcher. The
best attribute for disambiguating the first three examples--"President
of the United States" (assuming there are multiple Teddy Roosevelts
represented in the catalog)--is absent from the preferred access point,
and this is true for the remaining examples as well. Combining the
search argument with such attributes might better serve the end
user--"Did you mean Teddy Roosevelt, the former President of the United
States?"--without them ever needing to know the particular string used
by the library as the preferred access point. My hope is that FRAD (and
RDA) will lead us to include (and code) such attributes in our authority
records, as other cataloging communities have done.

The State University Libraries of Florida are using an Endeca catalog -
http://uf.catalog.fcla.edu/uf.jsp . Recently, we implemented a "Did you
mean ... " link for title, author and subject keyword searches. The
system searches the user's term in the authority tables and if there's a
cross-ref match, it displays a "Did you mean ... " for the authorized
term. Instead of populating the user's search results with hits based
on the authorized term, the system allows the user to click and do a new
search if desired.

Here are some examples:
Search: Roosevelt, Teddy
Did you mean?: Roosevelt, Theodore, 1858-1919

Search: Bush, George H. W.
Did you mean?: Bush, George, 1924-

Search: JFK
Did you mean?: Kennedy, John F. (John Fitzgerald), 1917-

Search: Dalai Lama
Did you mean?: Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho, Dalai Lama XIV, 1935- [the
standardized form of the current Dalai Lama's name]

Search: Mao Tse Tung
Did you mean?: Mao, Zedong, 1893-1976

Search: Lenin
Did you mean?: Lenin, Vladimir Il'ich, 1870-1924

Search: Drones
Did you mean?: Drone aircraft

Search: Electric cars
Did you mean?: Electric automobiles

Search: Partial birth abortion
Did you mean?: Dilatation and extraction abortion

Search: Alternative energy (or Alternative energies or Alternative
energy sources)
Did you mean?: Renewable energy sources

Search: Solar power
Did you mean?: Solar energy

Search: Nationalized health care (or Socialized medicine)
Did you mean?: National health services

Subject: Leveraging Authority Data in Keyword Searches

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I'm interested in
leveraging our authority records for keyword searches in our
"traditional" ILS.

For example a search using "author keywords" or "anywhere keywords" for
"Gafenco, Gregorio" gets no results, yet we have works for: Gafencu,
Grigore, 1892-

With a cross reference from: Gafenco, Gregorio, 1892-
In my mind, this ought not to be rocket science, but I'm not quite sure
how the algorithm would work. Something like:

Basic Keyword search in Bibliographic records +
Keyword search in Type z (authority) records fields 1XX & 4XX ->

if a hit occurs grab the 1XX and perform appropriate keyword search
(i.e. author keyword, title keyword, etc.) on it and add to result set.

Does that make sense? Would you get too many irrelevant hits? Would
this kill your processors?

Is anyone doing it? If so which system?

Thanks in advance for anyone's thoughts!

JJ
