With past discussion on the list about the value and relevance of a
library school education, I wanted to share this experience that may be
of interest.

This semester I gave a guest lecture to an S554 Library Systems class at
IU-Indianapolis SLIS on the topic of next-generation catalogs and worked
with the instructor, Mary Alice Ball, to have the students research and
present related software solutions as an assignment. The students were
also invited to give their presentations as colleagues at the IOLUG
spring conference [1] on May 15. The opportunity to present at a
professional conference had been advertised in the syllabus before
spring course registration, also.

The response was pretty neat. The class filled up. 18 of the students
volunteered to present their next-gen catalog solutions at the
conference. We had to cap registration for the conference, and then it
sold out. I suspect our session will be a little crazy but hopefully it
will also be fun and informative.

The conference materials are usually posted to the website afterwards if
anyone is interested in them, and if you want my lecture slides I'd be
happy to share them too. Feedback is welcome.
