Think 35 years back when there were only cards. And compare what
catalogers were doing back then with what they do now. How much original
cataloging, how much typing of cards and headings, how much annotating
and underlining, how much sorting and filing and running around the
cabinets, and don't forget the shelflist.
Is there any other area of library work where labor intensive
operations have been reduced and qualified staff eliminated on a scale
like this? Yet cataloging is still too labor intensive? OCLC, if anyone,
should know better.
