North Carolina State University Libraries
Associate Head of Metadata & Cataloging
Vacancy Announcement
The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position
of Associate Head of Metadata & Cataloging to lead the transformation of
monographic workflows from item-by-item cataloging of mass-published,
print materials towards workflows that prioritize electronic access to
the collections and the discovery of the Libraries' hidden special
collections. This management position offers the opportunity to join a
department that is committed to developing user-centered, transformative
approaches to cataloging in a changing landscape of bibliographic
control and in collaboration with colleagues across the Libraries. This
role is one of several Associate Head positions the NCSU Libraries has
established in its major departments as part of its commitment to
developing future leaders for academic and research libraries. The
Metadata & Cataloging department provides centralized cataloging
services for the Libraries and consists of 4 librarians and 15 support
staff. In addition to print, electronic, and audiovisual cataloging, the
department is responsible for non-MARC metadata for a wide variety of
digital projects.
Responsibilities
The Associate Head shares management responsibility for developing and
articulating policies and priorities for the department and contributes
to the future of the Libraries' intellectual organization of
information. He or she leads the bibliographic control activities for
monographic materials and provides guidance throughout the Libraries on
workflows related to access and description. The Associate Head manages,
supervises, and evaluates seven support staff who perform copy and
original monographic cataloging in a variety of languages, subjects, and
formats (including print, electronic, audio, video, and maps), mentors
and motivates staff in developing skill sets for continuously
transitioning workflows, and performs original and complex cataloging as
needed. He or she collaborates across the Libraries to minimize manual
processes, striving continuously for workflow innovation, efficiency,
and data consistency. The incumbent develops cataloging curricula and
coordinates cataloging training across technical services, sets targets
and oversees outcomes for the Libraries' expedited cataloging processes,
and works closely with the Special Collections Research Center to
improve the accessibility to its hidden collections. The Associate Head
participates in planning, serves on library-wide committees, task
forces, and teams. She or he represents the department in the absence of
the Head. Librarians at NCSU are expected to be active professionally
and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of
Metadata & Cataloging.
Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or
information science, plus a minimum of 3 years relevant professional
experience is required. Candidates should demonstrate a record of
innovation and creativity, as well as experience with facilitating
change in workflow development or technology transition. Thorough
knowledge of AACR2r, LCC, LCSH, MARC21 bibliographic and authority
formats, and in-depth experience with OCLC and some experience with
non-MARC metadata standards (MODS, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.) and XML/XSLT
is expected. Ability to successfully develop, supervise, and mentor
staff, combined with demonstrated experience with training, both in
groups and one on one is required. The position requires the ability to
excel as a team leader and to collaborate as a team member in a dynamic,
collaborative, technology-intensive environment. Candidates must have
the ability to effectively listen, speak, write, and communicate with
colleagues and customers in ways that build confidence and satisfaction
with individual and organizational performance. Proven interest in and
ability to learn evolving technologies valuable to libraries and their
community of users is a must. Candidates should show a record of ongoing
professional development and contribution. Preferred: Significant
supervisory experience. Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
