Job Opening: Digital Services Specialist (2 positions) - Boulder, Colorado

This is for two positions, one full and one half-time at the Boulder Public Library, Boulder, CO

OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:
Under general supervision, develops, maintains, and participates in the implementation of the Boulder Public Library Web site and related digital services. This includes working directly with the Systems & Digital Services Manager and Library staff on the integration of library digital resources into a coherent, organized presentation, with an emphasis on accessibility and ease-of-use, evidencing innovative style techniques coupled with ease of maintainability. Provides database maintenance support for the integrated library system, supporting all modules (acquisitions, circulation, cataloging, etc.) and producing statistical reports on both a regular and as-needed basis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Designs, develops and maintains the Library Web site, staff intraweb, and other Web applications (calendar, blogs, etc.), establishing overall navigational layout and structure as well as individual design and graphical elements. This includes working with various library committees and representatives to create an understanding of interrelationships of Web site components and develop consensus on content, size and aesthetics of the Web site.

2. Coordinates and performs activities directed at maintaining the integrity of the integrated library system (ILS). Monitors and verifies database information, employing a thorough knowledge of library systems, collection development, and cataloging practices.

3. Manages the design, development, and maintenance of the Boulder Public Library Web site and other digital services (calendars, blogs, wikis, etc.) including facilitating and coordinating meetings.

4. Advises Library departments in the development and maintenance of individual pages within the library Web site and intraweb, ensuring up-to-date content through the tracking of usage statistics, events calendars and aging of information.

5. Assists in training BPL staff and key consortium staff at management level on relevant modules of the ILS including upgrades and new products. Trains and works directly with library staff to help make them more effective content contributors and electronic service providers.

6. Employing advanced analytical skills, performs daily, weekly and other regularly scheduled update functions to the ILS.

7. Analyzes system use, and identifies and creates relevant statistical reports for Library Administration, managers of Collection Development, Acquisitions, and Cataloging on an appropriate periodic basis.

8. Assists in monitoring Web feedback e-mail: replies to patron comments and questions, or forwards to appropriate library personnel in a timely manner.

9. Other:
-- Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
-- Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others,
materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations,
policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
-- Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED IN WORK INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE
FOLLOWING:
Personal computer, telephone, photocopy machine, facsimile machine, and calculator.

REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field, and a minimum of two years of professional Web page design and implementation experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Demonstrated experience with XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Dreamweaver or other Web-authoring tools; knowledge of design concepts (graphical user interface, color management, image formatting, etc.) and
graphic tools (Fireworks, Photoshop, Quark, etc.). Knowledge of XML, XSLT, MARC, and other encoding formats. Experience working with an ILS, including statistical and database analysis. Understanding of cataloging and classification. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Courteous and effective communications skills and proven ability to work in a team environment. Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction record and credit history.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA/MLIS or comparable combination of education and experience. Previous work in a public library. Graphic design training or experience. Knowledge of Innovative Interfaces, Inc. integrated library system. Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, or proficiency in Braille and/or sign language.
