The Tisch Library at Tufts University seeks a librarian with strong managerial and leadership skills for the position of Head of Technical Services. The Head of Technical Services is a new position that coordinates the work of the department's constituent areas: acquisitions (including serials, bindery, and processing) and cataloging. The Head of Technical Services creates a vision for the development of a 21st Century Technical Services Department; motivates and empowers staff; provides ongoing evaluation of department organization to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and quality service; and serves as an advocate and leader for acquisitions and bibliographic control as new technologies are considered and implemented. Reports to the Director of Tisch Library and sits on the Director's Advisory Council. Serves on the university-wide Cataloging Oversight Group, which sets policy for the shared library catalog. Total staff: 14 FTE. Direct reports include the Acquisitions Manage!
r and 3 high-level cataloging Library Assistants. The Tisch Library is the library for Arts, Sciences, and Engineering and is one of 5 libraries at Tufts University.
Required: an ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library and Information Science; 7 years increasingly responsible experience as a technical services professional in an academic library, including extensive cataloging & management experience; knowledge of national cataloging and indexing standards & technologies, including emerging technical services technologies & practices; experience with cataloging outsourcing; excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate and build teams; commitment to customer service.
Preferred: Contributions to and involvement with the library profession; experience in acquisitions; knowledge of metadata for cataloging, web, indexing & digital libraries; understanding database design and function; experience in managing a professional and high-level staff; ability to enable and manage change: ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple priorities/projects; ability to work successfully in a dynamic team environment.
