Thank you goes to everybody online, offline, and off-list who
responded to my question regarding AACR2.

Probably the most efficiently accessible online copy is from the
Cataloger's Desktop. I got a reasonably up-to-date version from the
stacks of my library. I found others around and about. Through my
readings I confirmed what I already knew. MARC is a data structure
designed to allow the transmission of authority, classification,
community, bibliographic, and holdings information of libraries. ISBD
and AACR2 define rules and syntax for the content that goes into the
data structure.
