This announcement brings to my mind another idea, namely, the
relevance of the many other outside conferences, meetings, and
disciplines that can offer parts of the solutions to the "next
generation" library catalog issue. Some of them includes the Joint
Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL), the European Conference on
Digital Libraries (ECDL), the O'Reilly open source software
conference, etc. The following sounds worn out, but I'll say it
anyway. With the advent of the Web things for many institutions are
radically changing. It behooves us and our profession to look outside
our own boundaries for solutions to our problems.
Stretch yourself. Go to a conference where you will be in the
minority or an outsider. Make a sincere effort to participate. You
will return with a wider and refreshed perspective.
