Regarding the implied browsing versus searching question,
Emory University, January 2008:
Search
Search Total 110,973
Author 13,951
General 50,997
Other 20,011
Periodical 4,798
Series 223
Subject 3,999
Title 16,994
Browse
Browse Total 5,263
Author 702
Other 7
Periodical 1,412
Series 18
Subject 246
Title 2,878
Also, for searches, between 20% (keyword) and 50% (series)
of all searches against our catalog return 0 hits. Subject
searching has the second lowest success rate after series.
Our users would probably be better served if we got rid of
all choices save keyword, author, and title.
I have looked at several of the early Primo sites, and the
tagging feature is almost completely ignored by users. Iowa
State, for example, has ONE tag, which was assigned on Sept
11, 2007; Vanderbilt's Primo has 8 tags, all but one of which
were assigned in August or September of 2007.
