Definitely. Not only this, but the emphasis that we need has changed - the kind of functionality that is developing in the ERM products is now the stuff that is integral to a library's workflow (certainly in academic libraries at any rate) - with a large proportion of the budget going on subscriptions to electronic resources, and 'big deals' we need tools that help us manage these things.

I think separation of the search interface is a good first step, and gives us the opportunity to start deconstructing the ILS without impacting on the user experience - but we can't just stop here - we need systems that support our work flows in the current (and future) information environment.

Hmmm. Read the post. Isn't the point to no longer "ILS", that is to no
longer have a single, integrated system? This post seems to be
suggesting that we add APIs to our ILSs for the creation of "discovery
systems" as if the ILSs are just fine for everything else. I don't think
that's the case. If we are separating the discovery function from the
rest of the library management functions, then we need to go back and
analyze the whole workflow, from purchase, account management, check in
of serials, circulation, bindery .... Right now our data is designed to
move through the flow and end up in the catalog. If discovery is
happening through a non-integrated interface, I think the whole data
flow comes under question.
