I think this is absolutely relevant for NGC - it's about exposing library resources in via new routes and allowing users to interact with them in new ways. For me the NGC is either going to operate at the level of Flickr (i.e. be global, cf. Worldcat) or play very nicely with services that operate at this level.

The criticism from Wired is very much that if you invite this interaction, you can't always be sure what you are going to get - people don't always add much to the item. But it's slightly odd in that it says "while it’s great to see these image available to a much wider audience, we’re not so sure how much it’s going to help researchers." - which seems an odd way of approaching it - I haven't seen anywhere that claimed this project was trying to 'help researchers' - but the Wired perspective writes off widening access - which for me is the amazing thing about this - how many of the people browsing this collection on Flickr would have seen it on the LoC site?

Subject: [NGC4LIB] Tagging LC photos using flickr

Just wondering what people think of the Library of Congress experienting with Flickr to get help from Flickr users to tag and describe part of LC's extensive collection of photos. Sort of like user classification of LC resources. Maybe not the direction to go with NGCs, but interesting none the less.

  From an LC blog:

A little skepticism from a Wired blog:
